Exhibition with Messums West | Yakimono: A Culture of Exchange

arti fiant is delighted to collaborate with Messums West on Yakimono: Anglo-Japanese Exchange in Clay, an exhibition is a celebration of Anglo-Japanese cultural exchange in clay, from Christopher Dresser (1834-1904), Bernard Leach (1887-1979), Shoji Hamada (1894 - 1978) and Lucie Rie(1902-1995), through the 20th century, to contemporary figures trained in the Japanese tradition, such as Sam Chatto and Edmund de Waal.

Yakimono, literally meaning fired things, considers not merely influence but reciprocity. It reflects on how Japanese aesthetics transformed British ceramics through the modern period, and how that exchange continues to shape contemporary practice today.
